Every block on this quilt has a poignant moment in time when people were drawn together because of the lack of things. Building our country into its present chaotic days came with hard work and helping one another. Shoeing the horse of a neighbor was normal. It was also work and if you shirked work you missed out on creating those precious moments when our hearts were young and gay.
My hat goes off to those who carried the torch and persevered in fun times and in sad times, through the dark days as well as the light days, so we can indeed, with nostalgia, look on America as a country with "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" written on the tabloids of our history.
